Improving your diet could add an extra decade to your life expectancy

A peer reviewed study published in PLOS Medicine from the University of Bergen, Norway found that a young adult in the U.S. could add more than a decade to their life expectancy simply by changing their diet from a ‘typical western’ one to a healthier one that includes more whole grains, legumes and nuts and less red meat and processed meat. The study also found that an older person making the same changes to their diet would have smaller yet substantial gains to their life expectancy.

The researchers used meta analyses and data from the Global Burden of Disease Study. A comprehensive study, both regional and global that assesses mortality and disability from major diseases across 204 countries

The data and model are now available to the public (see Food4HealthyLife calculator).
