Following a healthy plant-based diet helps to reduce the risk of chronic kidney disease
The American Society of Nephrology have released the results of a new study uncovering a link between plant-based diets and kidney health. The 24 year study published in the peer reviewed Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology concludes that consuming a nutrient rich healthy plant based diet helps to protect against the development of chronic kidney disease.
The study included 14,686 middle aged adults involved already in another study known as the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study. The researchers found that the individuals with the highest adherence to a healthy plant-based diet had a 14% lower risk of developing chronic kidney disease than individuals with the lowest adherence to a healthy plant-based diet.
This study follows another recent study from the American College of Cardiology of 16,608 adults aged 45 and older published in the peer reviewed Journal of the American College of Cardiology that confirmed once more that plant-based diets are effective in reducing the risk of heart failure.
