High chance of secondary bone fractures for men

High chance of secondary bone fractures for men

A study released this week highlights the importance of men’s bone health, often overlooked and overshadowed by women’s bone health.  The findings are to be presented at the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research 2018 Annual Meeting in Montréal.

The 25 year Canadian study involved 17,721 men and 57,783 women aged over 50.  The researchers found that men had a three-fold higher risk of sustaining a secondary fracture within one year of a first fracture compared to those who did not.  Interestingly, the risk for women with a prior fracture was only 1.8 times higher compared to women without one.  The study found that the risk of secondary fracture in both men and women was highest overall in the first three years following a prior fracture.

NOTE:  The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research is the premier scientific meeting in the world on bone mineral and musculoskeletal science.
